Viridor has selected Technip Energies to perform the FEED study on its Runcorn CCS plant

Viridor has stated that the Runcorn CCS project aims to capture an estimated 900,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide annually. Half of the Co2 that is captured will come from biogenic sources and this will mean that the project will effectively remove 450,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere every year.

Now they have been awarded the FEED study, Technip Energies’ duties will consist of delivering a comprehensive design, through the use of the Canopy by T.EN™ solution, which is powered by Shell CANSOLV Co2 capture technology. The company has chosen to use the canopy solution, as it is part of Technip Energies’ strategic CCUS platform of technologies and solutions.

The purpose of this plant is for it to play a crucial and important role in the regional decarbonisation strategy. The plant will do this through providing a stable long-term baseload Co2 supply, which is intended for the HyNet industrial carbon capture cluster, based in the North West of England.

Furthermore, it has been said that Runcorn CCS project will soon be one of the first facilities to receive funding through the benefit of the UK Government’s Track 1 funding, for carbon capture projects. This advantage would also make the plant one of the first carbon capture projects to be based on an Energy-from-Waste facility in the world. This project will be an excellent development to the carbon capture industry, whilst also highlighting a significant milestone within the waste sector’s contribution to carbon reduction efforts.
