Verra validation has been provided to Partanna carbon capturing cement

The project ‘Using direct air capture to manufacture carbon negative concrete,’ has been registered by Verra through the VM0044 Methodology under Verra’s Verified Carbon Standard (VCS) Program.

This project validation means that Partanna is one of the only two concrete companies worldwide who has been able to achieve this status, whilst operating under Verra’s strict standards. Therefore, earning this validation is a huge milestone for the company.

Partanna’s current plan is to change the construction industry’s approach to emissions. So far the company’s plan involves removing one billion tons of CO2 from the atmosphere, therefore making sustainable growth without a compromising climate target possible and the company plans to do this by scaling its technology across global markets.

It is clear that Partanna’s cement is much better for the environment in comparison to ‘normal’ cement. This is because Partanna’s patented, sustainable, alternative cement avoids the energy intensive and decarbonation production process, which is used to produce Portland cement (OPC). This is possible as the company’s climate technology does not use Portland cement (OPC) at all, which ultimately means that carbon dioxide emissions which are associated with conventional cement production is avoided. In its place, Partanna uses brine and industry waste, which are both available in excess.

Partanna’s concrete operates just like a tree does, as it removes CO2 from the atmosphere and doing this means that it could be possible for Partanna’s materials to achieve true carbon negativity.

Going through Verra’s rigorous validation of the project, emphasises just how effective Partanna’s technology really is when it comes to removing and storing carbon. Plus, it has already been proven that Partanna’s materials integrate seamlessly with the construction equipment that is currently in use, which means that the company is able to offer an excellent ‘plug-and-play’ solution. The benefits of having this kind of system, is that builders are able to easily adopt these advanced materials without the need for costly infrastructure changes.

A final benefit of this system is that Partanna products and testing clearly meet rigorous standards, including ASTM and ACI. This means that they are suitable for mainstream construction and they are also extremely resilient in extreme conditions.

Now that they have received Verra’s validation of the project, Partanna says it, ‘will make a profound impact on global carbon levels by avoiding and removing significant amounts of CO2. Over the project’s current 10 year carbon crediting period the carbon-negative concrete is expected to reduce and sequester an average of 644,000 tons of CO2 per year, translating to over 6.4 million tons of CO2 by 2032 – the equivalent of removing all emissions for a year from a small country such as Cyprus or Luxembourg.’

Co-Founder and CEO of Partanna, Rick Fox, commented, “As one of only two companies in the world to have secured Verra project validation and registration approval for Direct Air Capture and carbon removal in cement, this milestone is a major accomplishment for Partanna. This is a clear demonstration that carbon credits in construction can be rock-solid. With our technology, we’re creating credits that are not only measurable and verifiable, but permanent. Our sustainable cement binder doesn’t just avoid emissions; it actively removes CO2 from the atmosphere. Verra’s validation means companies and developers can trust our credits to make a real impact, and that’s exactly what the planet needs right now.”
