A three-way partnership involving Amplus Energy will focus on offshore electrification with CCS

It has been agreed that Veri Energy will supply the necessary carbon store in order to support the deployment of Ocean Power’s new approach to creating electricity offshore. Ocean Power’s new approach for doing this is to use externally sourced natural gas and combine this with integrated carbon capture technology.

All of the electricity that is generated, will be sent from the generation hub within UK Northern North Sea and it will go to a variety of nearby oil and gas installations, which are located throughout the UK and Norway. Doing this will result in a reliable, cost-competitive, low-carbon source of power being provided and it will simultaneously avoid any complexities and challenges that might come about through the process of connecting to the grid infrastructure. After this, the captured CO2, which will be an estimated one million tonnes every year, will go on to be transported to Veri Energy’s planned carbon storage hub. Once the CO2 reaches this point, it will then be stored permanently.

Currently, Veri Energy has four carbon storage licenses and the company is looking to repurpose existing infrastructure around the Sullom Voe Terminal. This development would include the 200km East of Shetland pipeline. The purpose behind making this change, would be to develop CO2 reception, along with storage facilities that have the ability to receive and store about ten million tonnes of carbon dioxide on an annual basis. Furthermore, it will be possible to store CO2 that has comes from isolated emitters within the UK, Europe and further beyond, as well.

Veri Energy stated that the deal supported their ‘ambition to be a key player in the UK’s carbon storage landscape, contributing to global climate goals.’
