An innovative end-to-end solution for CCUS projects has been created by Baker Hughes

A brand new end-to-end, risk-based digital solution for CCUS operations has been introduced by Baker Hughes and this piece of equipment is called CarbonEdge™. This excellent technology provides comprehensive support around regulatory reporting and operational risk management.

The release of CarbonEdge, has officially made Baker Hughes the only provider to combine advanced risk management and reporting technology, which works for measurement, monitoring and verification (MMV) of CO2. This will all be made possible through the technology’s digital monitoring, engineering expertise, as well as domain knowledge across surface as well as subsurface planning and operations. It has been shown that through integration with Baker Hughe’s subsurface and autonomous modelling solutions, things such as storage site characterization workflows and comprehensive MMV frameworks will be delivered.

Another huge benefit of this innovative modern technology, is that CarbonEdge delivers precise, real-time data and provides alerts on CO2 flows across CCUS infrastructure. The data around CO2 flows, captures CO2 movement between carbon capture and compression to pipeline transportation, along with subsurface storage. This kind of information is ideal for customers, as showing the connectivity across the entire CCUS project lifestyle, means that customers can identify and manage risk, whilst also improving decision-making, enhancing operational efficiency and simplifying regulatory reporting.

It has been stated by Wabash Valley Resources, that they will use it for measurement, monitoring and finally, verification of CO2. Plus, they also mentioned that they will use the technology to collaborate with Baker Hughes, whilst the two companies work on the solution’s ongoing development.

Back in July 2024 was when Wabash Valley Resources (WVR), who is well-known as a pioneer in low-carbon ammonia fertiliser production, and Baker Hughes created a long-term agreement. This deal encompassed the decision to supply advanced technology services and solutions, which would be intended to support WVR’s ammonia production with projects such as, compression systems, injection well construction and perform testing and monitoring services. All of these individual projects would go into the current focus on the geological sequestration of CO2.

On top of this, this technology and process is applicable to any CCUS infrastructure across a multitude of industries. Plus it is also the first fully integrated digital offering that has been supplied by Baker Hughes’ Climate Technology Solutions portfolio.

Baker Hughes Chairman and CEO, Lorenzo Simonelli, commented, “CCUS technology solutions are essential for driving decarbonization of the energy and industrial sectors on our path to solving for climate change. With the launch of CarbonEdge, we not only expand our portfolio of digital solutions to support new energies and empower our customers’ ability to mitigate risk while enhancing operational efficiency, but also take a bold step toward a future with more sustainable energy development. We look forward to working alongside Wabash Valley Resources to refine and evolve CarbonEdge, ensuring it continues to meet the dynamic needs of a rapidly changing industry.”
