ForestWave’s cargo ships will be decarbonised by Value Maritime

Value Maritime (VM) has outlined a plan to provide ForestWave’s general cargo vessels FWN Sea and FWN Sun with two 3MW Filtree Exhaust Gas Cleaning Systems (EGCS) and Carbon Capture units.

ForestWave was founded a long time ago in 2003 and since 2011, the company has been growing and developing rapidly. The company has been involved in the multi-purpose shortsea segment, which is shown in the majority of the vessels they operate being between the size of 4.000 and 12.500 ton carrying capacity. These vessels also fly Dutch flag and include ice class and cranes, whilst they are mainly operated within European water and the Atlantic Basin.

This involvement in the multipurpose shortsea segment is what led Value Maritime to their collaboration with ForestWave. This partnership will involve VM retrofitting two 10,600 DWT general cargo vessels with VM’s advanced emission reducing Filtree EGCS system, as well as integrated Carbon Capture unit.

This excellent and forward-thinking partnership is the first collaboration between Value Maritime and ForestWave. The plan for this partnership states that the Filtree system with the carbon capture and storage technology will be installed on the specific vessels at the Value Maritime quay which is located in the Netherlands, specifically Rotterdam. The systems which are due to be installed, will be capable of capturing an estimated 10% of CO2 emissions.

Furthermore, the plug-and-play Filtree unit has been designed to include carbon capture features, and it was specifically designed around the unique and patented technology. The company has ensured that it can be differentiated from other exhaust gas cleaning systems, through its compact design. This design means that the technology is able to be easily installed on these types of vessels.

Through this partnership, ForestWave chose to have the next generation 3MW Filtree with a 10% carbon capture rate and they also chose to have the option to upgrade to a 30% carbon capture rate. This system will create a way for CO2 to be collected in a dedicated tank onboard and this will all be occurring soon, as the installations are due to happen in later 2024.

Manager ESG – ForestWave, Caspar van Overklift, commented, “We look forward to welcoming the EGCS and Carbon Capture units onboard our ships. We are excited about the concept of onboard capturing and storage and the opportunities it brings, and we look forward to gaining experience as the market for captured CO2 matures.”
