ExxonMobil’s and Mississippi’s CF industries’ carbon capture and storage agreement has been created with the outline that the project will transport and permanently store an estimated 500,000 metric tons of CO2 every year. The emissions that will be captured and stored will come from CF Industries’ complex, which is based in Yazoo City, a place known for creating nitrogen products for agricultural fertiliser.

This project is the second CCS project with Illinois-based CF industries, as well as the first one in Mississippi. It is also the fourth carbon capture and storage agreement with a major industrial customer. The aim of the project is to provide CF industries with the ability to reduce the site’s CO2 emissions by an estimated 50%. So far, it has been planned that startup will take place in 2028.

With over thirty years of experience in carbon capture, ExxonMobil also owns and operates the largest CO2 pipeline network within the country. CF Industries’ site in Louisiana, specifically Donaldsonville is the first site to connect into that network and with this addition the startup remains on track for 2025.

As former governor, Haley Barbour, mentioned, in a recent op-ed that, ‘carbon capture can help support the state’s economic growth, in addition to reducing emissions.’
