A collaboration to reduce lime production emissions has begun between Nuada and MLC

A new agreement states that Nuada and MLC will collaborate on a project which is specifically dedicated to demonstrating net-zero lime production. One of the key components of this project, is that it will be completed through the use of MOF-based carbon capture and it will be held at MLC’s flagship facility, which is in Missouri.

Throughout the project, Nuada’s advanced MOF-based VPSA carbon capture system will be utilised with the intention of reducing CO2 emissions by 95%. This excellent combined approach will support the decarbonisation goals of the lime industry, which aligns with the U.S. and international climate targets regarding net-zero emissions. This approach will accomplish this through providing a tailored solution for this hard-to-abate sector.

It has already become clear that Nuada’s carbon capture solution is intentionally designed to be ideal for use within carbon-intensive industrial processes. This is an excellent step forwards for the industry, as ‘normal’ carbon dioxide capture methods are usually impractical due to high energy and integration costs. In order to be so effective, this technology uses MOFs (Metal-Organic Frameworks), which are a highly selective advanced solid sorbent, which enables efficient CO2 capture, along with reduced energy use. This method also provides a vacuum swing pressure absorption (VPSA) process which utilises pressure in place of heat for separating CO2 from flue gases. The adaptations to this process provided by this method handle the cost and the operational challenges which normal carbon capture presents. Therefore this forward-thinking and innovative new method is an excellent solution for the lime industry, especially as it is in this industry that process emissions are a large barrier to decarbonisation.

Co-CEO of Nuada, Dr. Jose Casaban, commented, “Our breakthrough in carbon capture technology sets a new standard for energy efficiency, paving the way for transformative decarbonisation in hard-to-abate sectors like lime manufacturing. Through this collaboration with MLC, we are driving the next generation of carbon capture forward, setting a new standard for emissions reduction and sustainability in the lime industry.”

Director of sustainability and ESG at MLC, Fiona Woody, mentioned, “Our collaboration with Nuada reflects MLC’s dedication to exploring advanced technologies that reduce our carbon footprint while maintaining the high standards of purity and quality our customers expect. The smaller footprint and significantly lower energy consumption of Nuada’s technology make it highly attractive to us.”
