The CO2 capture plant for Heidelberg cement factory has been finished by SLB Capturi

A brand-new CCS plant has recently been created, this plant is called the Brevik CCS plant and it will now become part of The Longship CCS project. This is Europe’s first complete value chain which covers the capture, transport and storage of industrial CO2 emissions. Now that it has been completed, the Brevik plant will go into its commission phase and it has been planned that operations will be starting during 2025.

This specific carbon capture plant has been designed to capture a maximum of 400,000 metric tons of carbon dioxide on an annual basis. Plus, this facility will be dedicated to capturing CO2 from the Heidelberg Materials cement facility, which is located in Norway, specifically Brevik.

The new carbon capture facility includes the carbon capture system, compression system, heat integration system, intermediate storage and finally loadout facilities. Now that the plant is completed, it is ready for testing, as well as commissioning. Once the plant becomes operational, it is intended to be the world’s first commercial-scale carbon capture plant, based at a cement facility. Consequently, having this plant here will make it possible to produce net zero cement whilst maintaining the strength and quality of the product.

CEO, SLB Capturi, Egil Fagerland, commented, "Reaching this milestone is a testament to the power of working together and the collective determination to make a positive climate impact. We look forward to continuing these collaborative efforts as we move toward the commissioning and operational phases of the project. The Brevik CCS plant sets a precedent for future carbon capture initiatives, where learnings and insights from this groundbreaking project enable others to follow."

General Manager Northern Europe, Heidelberg Materials, Giv Brantenberg, added, "The mechanical completion of the Brevik CCS project is a landmark achievement in the decarbonization journey of the cement industry. This project exemplifies our commitment to innovation, collaboration, and the pursuit of solutions that address the pressing issue of climate change. We are immensely proud of the dedication and hard work of our teams and partners who have made this possible."
