The CCS FEED for Heidelberg Materials facility has been awarded to Fluor

It has been revealed that Fluor has signed a Front-end Engineering and Design (FEED) contract with Heidelberg Materials over the company’s GeZero project. The aim behind this feed is to integrate an industrial-scale carbon capture and storage solution into Heidelberg Material’s cement production facility based in Germany, specifically Geseke.

The technology that is being used, is based on state-of-the-art second generation advanced Oxyfuel technology. Plus, it has been revealed that Heidelberg Materials’ project has been set up with the aim of capturing 700,000 tons of carbon dioxide on an annual basis. When it has been captured, it is planned that the CO2 will then be transported to offshore storage sites, which are located within the North Sea. The CO2 will reach their destination through the use of a pipeline or a ship and once it is there, it will then be permanently and safely stored.

Fluor’s responsibilities will be to design integration of several decarbonisation technologies at the Geseke cement production facility. Right now, it has been planned that construction will start in 2026 and then commissioning will occur three years later.

Group President of Fluor’s Energy Solutions business, Mike Alexander, commented, “GeZero is a flagship project for the decarbonisation strategy of Heidelberg Materials and Fluor is excited to assist with this pioneering technology. Carbon capture and permanent storage is crucial in meeting sustainability goals.”
