Carbon Capture First completed by MOL and Value Maritime

A one-of-a-kind Exhaust Gas Cleaning System (EGCS) and Carbon Capture unit has been installed on Nexus Victoria by Value Maritime (VM). Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, Ltd. (MOL) owns the Nexus Victoria, an LR1 product tanker, and this installation is a milestone development in reducing CO2 emissions within the shipping industry. Installed in Singapore whilst under the supervision of VM’s specialised technical team, and it emphasises MOL’s commitment to sustainability.
The 15MW next-generation EGCS Filtree system created by VM is able to filter sulphur and (ultra)fine particulate matter straight out of the vessel’s exhaust stream, plus it is able to capture 10% of CO2 emissions from the vessel, and it could increase this to 30% if required. Onboard CO2 capture and storage capabilities are included in the system’s plug-and-play design, and these additions allow captured CO2 to be offloaded onshore. Once offloaded, the CO2 can be reused in methanol production, the food industry, or greenhouse cultivation. At 75,000 deadweight tonnage (DWT), Nexus Victoria is the largest vessel to use VM’s Sox scrubber, along with advanced carbon capture technology, plus it is also the first LR1 tanker to sail with the use of this system.
The ‘MOL Group Environmental Vision 2.2’ was set up to achieve net zero greenhouse gas emissions (GHG) by 2050, and this plan will also focus on encouraging the development of society, people, and the Earth in a sustainable way. ‘MOL Group Environmental Vision 2.2’ is now one of MOL’s predominant strategies within their wider management plan, ‘BLUE ACTION 2035.’
Value Maritime is looking to expanding its partnerships across Asia by enhancing its carbon logistics infrastructure with Value Carbon, the dedicated carbon capture and storage sister company to VM.
Christiaan Nijst, Co-founder and Director of Value Group, commented, “End-to-end carbon capture solutions are essential to achieving industry-wide decarbonisation. By integrating maritime carbon capture with onshore utilisation, we’re closing the loop on emissions and creating a more sustainable shipping ecosystem.”
Alican Kilinc, Operations Director at Value Maritime, mentioned, “Our first commissioning in Singapore is a milestone for Value Maritime. We appreciate MOL’s trust in our technology and are excited to support their decarbonisation efforts. Collaborating with one of the world’s leading shipowners drives us to push innovation forward and provide the industry with the most effective emission-reducing solutions.”
Hiroyoshi Kubo, Executive Officer – Tanker Unit at MOL, added, “This system represents a crucial step in decarbonising vessels that cannot yet transition to next-generation fuels. Together with Value Maritime, we are committed to advancing carbon capture solutions and building a CO2 value chain that contributes to a sustainable, carbon-neutral industry.”
