Buzzi has revealed the carbon capture plant that has been developed by Nuada

A meeting was hosted by the Monselice Plant and the purpose of this meeting was to present the Nuada project which was recently launched. The Monselice Project aims to accelerate the decarbonisation of the cement industry and the meeting that they held was first and foremost held for the local community.

The purpose behind the Monselice experimental activity is to acquire useful information for the industrial-scale construction of a plant of this specific technology, potentially capable of capturing the majority of the CO2 emitted by the Group’s cement plants.

Right now the carbon capture solution that Nuada operates with, is a highly energy-efficient technique. This solution works through taking new solid sorbents, which are known as Metal-Organic Frameworks (MOF) and combining these with an advanced vacuum oscillating pressure adsorption (VPSA) process. This system is electrically powered and it has the effect of separating the CO2 from industrial flue gases through the use of pressure in place of heat. A huge benefit of approaching the task in this way, is that this technique provides an excellent strategy to overcoming the challenges that are associated with energy consumption, costs and finally, integration. This improvement can be seen once this method is compared to the use of traditional carbon capture methods that are still in the industry.

The event that the Monselice Plant hosted began with opening remarks made by Paolo Zelano, CEO of Buzzi Unicem and Paolo Paoletti, Director of the Plant. From there, Luigi Buzzi, Group Technical Director, illustrated the principles of the Roadmap ‘Our Journey to Net Zero’, which is a long-term plan for decarbonisation and furthermore, this plan aligns with the objectives set out by the European Green Deal.
