Aker Solutions has created an agreement with PETRONAS Carigali, MISC and Clean Energy System over a zero-emission power station

A new Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) has been created around the Zero Emission Power Station (ZEUS) and it involves Aker Solutions, PETRONAS Carigali and Clean Energy System. This MoU is based on a pilot project that is dedicated to a pioneering energy solution which utilises advanced oxyfuel combustion with immediate CO2 capture and storage.

This MoU was created between all the companies during the ONS Conference 2024 in Norway, specifically Stavanger. One of the most significant things about this MoU is the huge step towards sustainable and affordable energy production it represents. It has been made clear by Aker Solutions and their new partners, that all of the participating companies are looking forward to seeing the impact and benefits this project will bring to the industry.

The ZEUS technology operates through using oxyfuel combustion to convert high CO2 natural gas into dispatchable power, whilst simultaneously capturing 100% of the CO2 emissions. Once this has occurred the CO2 is then instantly injected into the reservoir, where it is retained for permanent storage, or alternatively, it can be used to increase production of both oil and gas prior to being permanently stored.

Along with this excellent process a huge advantage of using the ZEUS technology, is that it has the ability to manage the combustion at elevated pressures, which ultimately enables more compact and simplified process equipment. The effects of using this technology, is that it could lead to significant cost savings, whilst also enhancing CO2 management capabilities. Altogether, ZEUS aims to deliver zero-emission, affordable and reliable power, whilst the technology is also well-positioned to be a significant bridge technology in the transition to a more sustainable energy landscape.

Moreover, oxyfuel combustion comes with another unique ability to burn untreated gas when it comes straight from the well. This includes gas that consists of up to 90% CO2. Performing this method means that the opportunity for using gas reserves is opened and it is no longer considered uneconomic to develop.

Clearly this new technology, ZEUS, has huge potential to be significant bridge technology throughout the transition to a more sustainable energy landscape. This potential is also portrayed through the parties’ intentions with the technology once it is fully developed. It has been stated that the companies intend to scale ZEUS to address rising energy demands and to support the transition to a more renewable energy mix. The adaptation of the technology for maritime use will be handled by MISC and they will ensure that the technology is available on dedicated floating units. In order for this conversion to occur successfully, it will take place through a collaboration with key suppliers.

Executive vice president of Power Solutions at Aker Solutions, Jo Krabbe, commented, “We're excited to bring ZEUS to life alongside our partners. This collaboration marks a significant step forward in our mission to solve energy challenges using innovative technology.”
