Carbon capture for durable engineered CO2 removals - DACCS, BECCS, and DOC

23 Oct 2024
Carbon Capture, Utilisation, Storage & Blue Hydrogen

Removing carbon dioxide (CO₂) from the atmosphere on a large scale will be needed to reach any international net-zero emissions targets and avoid global warming beyond 1.5-2°C. Carbon capture solutions similar to those deployed at the megatonne scale for fossil-fuel based industrial sources could be used to capture and store CO2 from the air, biogenic industrial processes, or the ocean to provide immediate, measurable, large-scale carbon dioxide removal (CDR). This presentation will provide an in-depth overview of DACCS (direct air capture with carbon storage), BECCS (bioenergy with carbon capture and storage), and DOC (direct ocean capture) technologies. By discussing technical, environmental, and economic barriers and drivers for growth, the carbon dioxide removal potential of these CDR approaches will be examined. The role of carbon markets (both compliance and voluntary) in accelerating development of these solutions will also be explored.
